Job Description
Position Overview
We are seeking a licensed Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive nursing care within a state-operated correctional healthcare environment. This role delivers direct patient care to an incarcerated population while ensuring compliance with all state and federal nursing regulations. The Registered Nurse plays a critical role in patient assessment, medication administration, emergency response, and coordination of care within a secure facility.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide professional nursing care to patients housed within a correctional healthcare setting
• Conduct nursing rounds, assess patient conditions, and document symptoms, reactions, and progress
• Measure and record vital signs and administer prescribed medications, treatments, and immunizations
• Monitor restrained or isolated patients at required intervals and provide immediate medical intervention as needed
• Respond to medical emergencies, including first aid, CPR, and coordination of transport to outside medical facilities
• Assist physicians with diagnostic evaluations and treatment plans
• Develop, implement, and review patient care plans; provide health education to patients
• Perform specialized nursing procedures as required, which may include:
• IV therapy
• Wound care
• Oxygen therapy
• Tube feeding
• Catheterization
• Suctioning
• Phlebotomy
• Dialysis or transfusion support (as assigned)
• Maintain accurate medical records, medication logs, and controlled substance inventories
• Complete required documentation including incident, accident, and administrative reports
• Coordinate outpatient appointments, prescription refills, and diagnostic testing
• Order and manage medical supplies and equipment inventory
• Serve as a liaison with internal departments and healthcare providers
• Participate in staff education, training, and orientation of new employees
• May provide shift leadership or oversight of licensed and unlicensed healthcare staff as assigned Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• Knowledge of professional registered nursing practices and procedures
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to nursing and healthcare delivery
• Ability to operate medical equipment (e.g., blood pressure cuffs, EKG machines, stethoscopes, EKG machines)
• Strong assessment, documentation, and clinical judgment skills
• Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate medical and administrative reports
• Ability to work effectively in a structured, secure environment
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and composure in high-stress situations
• Ability to respond quickly to medical emergencies Minimum Qualifications
• Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of Ohio Board of Nursing (per Ohio Revised Code 4723.03)
• Ability to meet all background, security, and clearance requirements required for work in a correctional facility Work Environment & Physical Requirements
• Minimum-security correctional facility
• Some walking required, including distance from parking areas to assigned work location
• Must be able to respond physically to medical emergencies
• Adherence to all safety, security, and facility protocols is required
