General Statement of Job
The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is an entry level nursing leadership role that coordinates the delivery of patient care on the patient care units on a fulltime basis. Performs in the role of professional staff nurse, plans, delivers and evaluates nursing care to designated patients under the direction and supervision of the Manager. The ANM performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties; performs miscellaneous duties as assigned and assist with administrative task, quality improvement initiatives or other task that are in alignment with the organizational strategic plan. The ANM may take a patient assignment when business or operational needs dictate, in order to deliver high quality patient care. Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions:Nursing Management The Assistant nurse manager ensures the delivery of patient care on the Patient Care Unit during an assigned shift through planning, communicating, directing and evaluating individual nursing staff activities.Directs and delegates patient care assignments to staff.Makes patient care assignments based on patient needs and staff skill mixMonitors staffing needs and utilizes the staffing grids to assure proper skill mix to meet patient needs. Utilizes Hospital wide and Surgical services policies and nursing professional recommended practices as standards for nursing practice.Enforces adherence to the Nurse Practice ACt and ensures all regulatory agency standards are met. Provides concise morning huddle report .Provides feedback to staff regarding quality of patient care and makes appropriate recommendations for improvement.Promptly communicates all pertinent patient care, physician or patient/family issues to the unit managerServes as a professional role model for the unit in appearance, behavior, professionalism and decision making/problem solving.Responsible for employee education of all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.Provides supervision and guidance to obtain, document and charge for resources Facilitates compliance with EB practice standards for core measures and NPSG.Works with Nurse Manager to set departmental goals, strategy for goal achievement and ongoing performance improvementPerforms in the role of professional nurse (plans, delivers and evaluates nursing care to designated patients).Provides suggestions and recommendations to improve resource allocation and supply utilization.Acts as a liaison between patients/families, physicians and other involved departmentsAudits documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness Serves as clinical expert and resource to staff members through leadership and education. Maintains and seeks opportunities to improve clinical competence through continued educational and quality improvement activities in clinical and management areas.Participates in the peer interview process.Provides input into the staff performance evaluations and counseling process.Provides input into the recruitment and termination of employees.Identifies staff educational or competency needs and informs the Unit Director/ Clinical Manager of staff education needs.Ensures patient confidentiality and protected healthcare information is protected according to all regulations and facility policies.Serves as a clinical resource For surgical servicesServes as a liaison for patients/families, physicians and between other facility departments to promote positive patient outcomes and a compassionate environment Promotes positive customer relations.Collaborates with physicians to ensure appropriate patient outcomes, ensure surgical case special needs are available and preference cards are accurate.. To maintain surgeon satisfaction Ensures that staff maintains a safe and comfortable therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards and TJC Patient Safety Standards.Promotes patient and family education within the unit. Visits patients and family members in OPS to assess customer satisfaction and nursing care.Insures compliance with Evidence Based Medicine practices. Facilitates service recovery process on the unit. Participates in investigation of complaints and grievances. Facilitates Staff Education and Development Assists with the Staff Development process to enhance staff competency and safe patient care via one to one instruction or coordination of in-services via the Education Department and other means.Closely monitors department preceptor activities as well as the new staff members progress in the department specific orientation Meets with new staff members and collaboratively conducts the weekly preceptee evaluation tool with the preceptorCommunicates needs for additional orienting, education to unit manager/director for new and existing staff membersEducates staff members on new policies or amendments to policies and/proceduresUtilizes team huddles daily to communicate pertinent patient care informationAssists with the implementation of corrective action and/or education when needed.Assisted with the implementation of unit based competency evaluation and education of staff.Maintains unit-based competency according to unit policy.Is self-motivated and demonstrates a need for professional growth.Fosters professional teamwork.Functions as a resources person.Is an active participant in Performance Improvement & Customer Service TeamsIs committed to professional self development.Participates in at least 1 community outreach event per year.HICS: Performs and fulfills all HICS (Hospital Incident Command System) responsibilities, assignments, tasks and roles as directed and needed by the facility in times of emergency and disaster.Complies with all policies and procedures that pertain to HIPPA including the minimum necessary requirements for this position. As a part of the requirements for this position, the employee has access to the entire medical record for the purpose of providing direct and indirect nursing care to patients in the medical surgical telemetry environment.Limits the protected health information (PHI) disclosed or requested to the amount reasonably necessary to achieve the purpose of the request. The disclosures or requests that occur on a routine basis include: patient demographics, condition, notification, of actual/potential abuse or neglect, description of injuries for the purpose of crime investigation, actual/potential for organ donation, and patient disposition updates.Makes disclosures for the purpose of appropriate patient care and meeting of local and state requirements for reporting. Criteria established to limit the PHI disclosures/requests to that which is reasonably necessary includes: communicating only the PHI that is required by law, upon request, and for the correct/intended purpose of providing patient care and notification to local/state authorities and or regulatory agencies.Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, manmade or natural.Additional Duties:This job description reflects the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a complete description of all the work requirements and expectations that may be inherent in the position.
