Job Title: Emergency Room Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Room Nursing, Ambulatory Care Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour shifts, may need to cover day or night shifts Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum one year clinical nurse experience preferred; prior experience in the specialty area is preferred License: Valid, current, full and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska Certifications: Must have BLS and PALS upon hire; ACLS must be obtained within six months of hire date Must-Have: Current Alaska license; flu vaccination; submit two fingerprint cards upon acceptance Description: The clinical nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages. This position requires professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments. The ability to work independently in completing assignments is essential. Guidelines include provider orders, standards of care, nursing policies and procedures manuals, and hospital policies. Nursing duties include support to individuals of all ages and their families. Clinical decisions are made independently during the scheduled shift, maintaining complete accountability for all actions taken. The role requires the consultation with the appropriate manager/supervisor and/or ancillary department in difficult situations. Reacting calmly and making sound nursing judgments in emergency situations is crucial. Accountability includes proper delegation and supervision of nursing assistants/technicians. The position promotes excellence in care, implementing safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem disease or treatment complications. Prioritizing care based on acuity and patient preference is necessary. Anticipating potential problems and adapting to changes in the area is expected. The nurse initiates, manages, and documents nursing procedures consistent with scientific principles and departmental policy. Knowledge of equipment use is required, along with accurate administration of age-specific medications and therapeutics. Successful coordination of patient care activities with physicians and other healthcare team members is essential. Actions to reduce, correct, or prevent immediate, ongoing, or potential risks to patients must be initiated. The nurse facilitates healing by providing individualized, goal-oriented nursing care based on scientific principles and the nursing process. Explaining tests, procedures, and disease processes to patients and significant others is part of the role. Following through on nursing care plans with appropriate teaching and skill demonstration is required. Evaluating patient progress or lack of progress towards goals involves directing new goal setting and revising patient care plans as necessary. Documentation of the patient's response to care is essential. Confidentiality of patient information is to be assured. The nurse accomplishes assessments through interviews, observations, and the nursing process. Completing thorough nursing admission databases and initial patient assessments is vital. Identifying problems and nursing diagnoses by recognizing the impact of health problems on patients and families is necessary. The role requires distinguishing between normal and abnormal assessments to identify patient capabilities and limitations, including psychosocial risks. The nurse develops and contributes to a plan of nursing action based on existing and potential patient problems and obtainable patient responses. Effective communication with staff, patients, significant others, and other members of the healthcare team is important. Guidance, leadership, and cooperative work with others must be established and maintained. Providing educational knowledge to develop skills and promoting understanding through interactive engagement with patients, families, and staff is needed.
