Job Description
A Registered Professional Dialysis Nurse plays a crucial role in providing safe and high-quality patient care through comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This position encompasses actively participating in creating and executing personalized care plans, delivering both direct and indirect care during the dialysis treatment process, including thorough pre- and post-treatment assessments and administering prescribed medications.
Additionally, the Registered Professional Dialysis Nurse is responsible for the effective and safe operation of dialysis equipment and supplies, adhering to hospital and departmental policies while fostering a culture of resource stewardship to minimize waste and maintain equipment integrity. Precise and timely documentation in the medical record is essential, reflecting both patient outcomes and responsible resource management. This role combines clinical excellence with sustainable practices, ensuring high-value dialysis care delivery.
Responsibilities:
• Exemplify the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Maintain proper hand hygiene, utilize PPE, and uphold facility hygiene standards, including the cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment.
• Operates various dialysis equipment safely and effectively while documenting all procedures accurately, ensuring alignment with organizational policies.
• Adheres to policies regarding water treatment procedures and testing, demonstrating proper technique in electrolyte addition as directed.
• Conducts thorough pre- and post-dialysis nursing assessments covering patient weight and fluid removal, lung sounds, vital signs, lab reviews, and care of dialysis access.
• Collects pre- and post-dialysis lab specimens in accordance with physician orders and organizational protocols.
• Initiates, monitors, and concludes each dialysis treatment in accordance with organizational guidelines.
• Responds to dialysis-related complications and emergencies by following established protocols and seeks necessary approvals as outlined.
• Administers medications during dialysis, including PRN medications, blood products, and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), in line with policies.
• Ensures timely transport of patients to and from dialysis sessions, actively minimizing care delays.
• Contributes to the creation and implementation of individualized care plans for every patient.
• Verifies treatment safety by performing and recording essential equipment safety checks before every session.
• Accurately documents charges for patient care, ensuring timely recording of billable services.
• Manages time effectively to maintain efficient workflow.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Education/Skills:
• Associate's degree in nursing required.
• Bachelor's degree in Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Experience:
• 1 year of dialysis experience required.
• 1 year of acute clinical experience as a registered nurse preferred.
• Experience in ICU, CCU, ER, or Med Surg settings is preferred.
• Relevant clinical patient care experience preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
• RN license in the state of employment or compact required.
• BLS certification required.
• ACLS certification required.
• PALS certification required at CHRISTUS Children's Hospital.
In accordance with the CHRISTUS Health License, Certification and Registration Verification Policy, all associates must obtain required certifications within the designated timeframe.
