The Nurse Manager is responsible for the organization and management of nursing practice and resident care of their assigned unit, in collaboration with the nursing supervisors on a 24-hour basis. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Nursing Leadership:Is familiar with the Episcopal Church Home (ECH) mission statement, core values/competencies, and the nursing department philosophy. Must be able to discuss their concepts in meetings and whenever an opportunity occurs in the practice area.Is familiar with and able to interpret and enforce all policies and regulations. Consistently practices compliance with established policies and procedures.Maintains awareness of the government regulatory process.Uses the ANA standards of gerontological nursing practice as a framework for professional responsibilities.Supports nursing colleagues in their professional development toward common goals.Attends and participates in nursing department leadership meetings.Attends in-service programs, in and outside the facility, consistent with nursing practice.Unit Management:Responsible for the management and supervision of all nursing staff on the assigned unit. Develops and fosters staff morale and teamwork, and is a positive role model.Is responsible for the implementation of nursing goals on the unit.Assigns nursing responsibilities on the unit. Is familiar with job descriptions for all staff on the nursing unit and ensures compliance and expectations are met. In collaboration with Human Resources, is responsible for interviewing and making hiring recommendations for nursing positions on the unit.In collaboration with the staff education coordinator, assists with new employee orientation in the unit.Monitors staff for use of proper body mechanics in moving/transferring residents and equipment.Assesses the skills and educational needs of staff. Communicates with the staff education coordinator. Facilitate staff to attend workshops, seminars, and continuing education programs. Provides opportunities for staff to participate in actualizing goals and plans of the nursing department.Completes and executes performance evaluations when due.Effectively utilizes the progressive discipline process when warranted.In collaboration with HR, is responsible for initiating the employment termination process.Holds monthly and as-needed staff meetings; submits a report of all staff meetings, along with an attendance list to the Staff Education Coordinator.Is familiar with the assigned unit’s budget. With the Director of Nursing’s guidance, manages it within acceptable parameters.In collaboration with the Director of Nursing, identifies areas where cost control is needed.Clarifies cost control awareness with staff in monthly meetings as indicated. Works with staff to reduce costs while maintaining the high quality of care.Utilizes supplies and staff time in a cost-effective manner.Reports unsafe condition(s) to security and maintenance as soon as possible.Responds to emergency situations according to the established ECH disaster plan.Per nursing department needs, ss responsible for and participates in “on call” on a rotating basis. Documents and follows through with all incidents/accidents and follows through per policy. Is familiar with established emergency procedures and staff incidents.Resident Support:Creates and maintains an environment of respect for the residents. Assists and guides staff to maintain privacy, resident rights, and a quiet, peaceful environment. Encourages resolution of issues.Assesses and identifies residents’ needs and communicates this information to other health care professionals (clinical associates, nursing administration, nurse practitioners, physicians, dietitians, therapists, social work) on a regular and timely basis.Attends or ensures nursing leadership representation at the daily morning report.Initiates and/or participates in quality assurance monitoring and evaluation of resident care.Conducts walking rounds on the unit to assess the environment for safety issues. Assigns nursing staff members to resident care activities and other duties.Make recommendations to the Director of Nursing related to the nursing practice and resident care through regular meetings/written proposals.Develops and implements residents' care plans per regulations.Ensures care plans and care cards are updated as the resident’s condition and/or orders change.In collaboration with the social worker, notifies responsible parties of a change in the resident's condition.Is familiar with requirements specific to MDS+. Develops and completes MDS nursing portion. Completes and reviews CAA’s as required.Transcribes and implements physician orders per policy/procedures.Follows established documentation procedures and enforces correct documentation procedures with staff.Maintains contact and ensures compliance with the skin integrity program.Reviews EMRs to ensure they are accurate. RequirementsQUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of New York State regulatory standards and patient rights. Effective interpersonal communication, both written and verbal are essential. Need to be flexible and able to adapt to change. Enthusiastically models the ESLC core values and competencies as noted above.Basic computer skills required, including the ability to create, open, save, and retrieve electronic documents and emails, operate a laptop or desktop computer, and work within a Microsoft Windows operating system. EMR experience strongly preferred. MS Office and Outlook experience helpful.Ability to interact courteously and tactfully with staff, residents, family members, visitors, vendors, and the general public. EDUCATION: Completion of an approved program of professional nursing and a current/uncumbered NYS RN license required. Unexpired American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult CPR certification required. EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years’ clinical experience, one year in gerontology required. One (1) year of nursing management experience preferred.
