Requirements
The Nursing House Supervisor provides oversight and makes decisions related to patient care that influence hospital and the SMMC Clinic departmental operations on all shifts, weekends and holidays. The Nursing House Supervisor articulates issues and problems to department heads with recommendations for solutions. Decisions must encompass knowledge of department and organizational goals and strategies. On nights and weekends, this position functions as the senior in-house decision-maker for the hospital. He/she facilitates discussion and problem- solving among staff and appropriate decision-making skills demonstrating competency in the care of patients of all ages.
Duties:
• Responsible for coordination of duties of nursing personnel for assigned shift.
• Create patient and unit assignments based on acuity and skill level of available nursing personnel.
• Assess staffing for on-coming shift, and week ahead, make appropriate schedule changes as needed.
• Communicate physician orders to appropriate nursing personnel.
• Function as a mentor and role model.
• Function as a resource for other nursing personnel.
• Perform treatments, IV therapy, and procedures on patients which LPN’s are not able to perform.
• Augment staffing as needed.
• Formulate nursing decisions within the scope of licensure and according to established hospital policies and procedures.
• Manage multiple priorities and stressful situations. Remains calm even in chaotic situations and seek solutions to problems as they arise.
• Maintain clinical and professional competency levels appropriate to the services provided and the needs of different age groups served.
• Collaborate and negotiate with staff, other health care providers, patients and families.
• Plan, organize, prioritize, and schedule. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of activities relating to the provision of patient care. Consistently displays a positive “can do” attitude even in the face of adversity.
• Keeps Manager abreast of critical issues that arise
• Provides coverage for and schedules as needed, lunches and breaks for nursing units.
Assess
• Incorporate the nursing process to assess, plan, and evaluate the patient.
• Prioritize patient care based on assessment of patient health care status.
• Assess patient educational requirements. Based on assessment, teach, advise, inform, and direct others.
Plan and Evaluate
• Collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care.
• Report significant and accurate data regarding aspects of care to the appropriate people.
• Revise plan of care based on patient outcomes.
• Recognize variations in the patient’s condition and takes appropriate action.
• Develop individualized patient care plan on admission and revise based on patient outcomes.
Emergency Department
• Perform initial assessment on patients presenting to the ER and document assessment findings on the ER record.
• Perform and record vital signs and documents findings on ER record.
• Perform treatments as ordered by the ER provider.
• Thoroughly and accurately completes ER record and charge requisitions.
• Notify ER provider of patient arrival and results of initial examination.
• Re-evaluates patient’s condition as needed and documents findings.
• Maintain a confident, secure atmosphere.
• Explains treatments, rationale, and expected outcomes to patients and significant others.
• Include family or others in education of treatments, medications, preventative measures and follow-up.
• Knowledgeable of ER equipment.
OB/L&D/NBN
• Perform initial assessment, obtain vital signs and obtain a fetal monitor strip on patient presenting to the L&D suite.
• Perform and report vaginal checks for cervical dilation & effacement, fetal presentation and station of presenting part, status of membranes.
• Record time of onset and frequency of contractions, fetal movement.
• Set up delivery table and assist provider with the delivery as needed.
• Set up baby warmer and resuscitative equipment. Perform newborn assessment with accurate evaluation of on newborn condition, including APGAR scoring. Provide care for newborn.
• Provide supportive care.
Medical Surgical Unit
• Possess knowledge of pharmacology. Adhere to pharmacy policies and procedures.
• Report/record information legibly and appropriately.
• Participate in Quality Assurance activities.
• Communicate effectively with a wide range of age groups, ethnic, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Organizational skills, with ability to prioritize with accuracy and speed.
• Make nursing decisions within the scope of licensure and according to established hospital policies and procedures.
• Maintain professional ethics.
• Attend 75% of nursing staff meetings and other available in-service education that pertain to professional growth and development.
• Attend mandatory in-services.
• Other duties may be assigned.
Requirements:
• Graduate of approved RN School of Nursing with a current Idaho RN license.
• BSN preferred or Bachelor Degree in related healthcare fields preferred.
• BLS required.
• NRP & ACLS Certification are required within six (6) months of accepting position.
• Certification in TNCC and PALS are required within first year of accepting position.
• AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring required within 2 years of accepting position.
