Job Description
Providing expert care in the operating room requires skill, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with surgical teams. This role offers the opportunity to deliver 1:1 nursing care to patients throughout the surgical process, from pre-operative preparation to post-operative recovery. Cases span a broad range of specialties including general surgery, orthopedics, vascular, ENT, ophthalmology, urology, endoscopy, and gynecology, serving patients from neonates to geriatrics.
Responsibilities include:
• Deliver direct patient care before, during, and after surgery, addressing physical, psychosocial, and general care needs
• Manage anesthetic drug effects and monitor lines and catheters such as arterial, Swan-Ganz, spinal, and epidural
• Perform meticulous surgical counts and oversee flash sterilization processes to ensure patient safety
• Properly handle sterile equipment, label surgical specimens, and administer blood products according to protocols
• Operate mechanical, electrical, and powered surgical equipment safely and in compliance with manufacturer instructions
• Maintain clear, continuous communication with surgeons and anesthesiologists regarding patient status
• Adhere strictly to universal precautions and departmental procedures for all phases of surgical care
Required qualifications and certifications:
• Current Registered Nurse license in New York State
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
• Preferred: Minimum of 2 years of operating room nursing experience
