Job Description
First Physicians Group of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is seeking to employ a Part time Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join their Truama /Acute Care Surgery team consisting of surgical ICU, trauma, and emergency general surgery.
Sarasota is located approximately 60 minutes south of Tampa. The area is known for the arts, great restaurants, world-class beaches, excellent schools, and a wide variety of activities for all ages.
Position Highlight:
• Join nine (10) Trauma/General/Surgical Critical Care Surgeons and 20 Advanced Practice Providers.
• SMH is a Level II Trauma Center, a Comprehensive Stroke Center and the only hospital providing trauma care services in Sarasota County.
• FDOH Designation Trauma Center since 2016 and re-designated in 2023 with no deficiencies.
• Over 175,000 emergency visits and 2800 Trauma Activations annually
Responsibilities include:
• 6 to 7 shifts a month working the night shift 6:00 P.M. – 6:00 A.M. Must be flexible and willing to work occasional weekends and holidays.
• Trauma response in the Emergency Department, rounding in Surgical Trauma ICU and hospital floors.
• PA-C will see patients in the general surgery and trauma acute care outpatient clinic and provide Surgical First Assist in the operating room for both elective, acute care, and traumatic surgical cases.
• Ability to perform procedures including, but not limited to, placement and removal of chest tubes, arterial lines, and central venous catheters.
Requirements:
• Current NCCPA or ANCC certification required and must also have an active license by the State of Florida by the time of hire.
• Board Certified Physician Assistant, Board Certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner who has active, relevant and routine experience in 2 of the last 4 years (defined as at least 500 acute care inpatient encounters over two years).
• Board Certified Adult/Family Nurse Practitioner, who has active, relevant, and routine experience in 2 of the last 4 years (defined as at least 1,000 acute care inpatient encounters over two years).
• ACLS/BLS required. ATLS is preferred and can be obtained at Sarasota Memorial Hospital if not currently certified.
• Minimum of two (2) years Critical Care APP experience.
• Qualified candidate must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to work within a team.

The APRN IV Trauma is highly specialized in Trauma protocols and procedures. An APRN is a registered nurse and therefore can perform all duties that are considered routine duties of a registered nurse. In addition, an APRN holds a master's or doctoral degree. The APRN functions as part of the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective advanced nursing care to patients within the APRN's scope of practice.
Require approved APRN board certification**.
• *Must be certified as a APRN by a recognized national certifying body having established standards for APRN's. The following organizations are recognized national certifying bodies for the Nurse Practitioner: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; American Nurses Credentialing Center; National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties; National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners & Nurses; Oncology Nurses Certification Corporation; Critical Care Certification Corporation; National Commission on Certification; and American Association of Heart Failure Nurses.
- Require advanced degree from an accredited school or college of nursing*
• Must have had a Medicare number in the State of Florida prior to 1/1/03; if not, must have a master's degree in nursing in addition to being a Registered Professional Nurse who is authorized by Florida to practice in accordance with state law.
- Require minimum of one (1) year experience or post graduate APP resident in trauma services.
- Prefer ability to work independently, effectively and collaboratively with physicians and other allied health personnel in the hospital and/or office setting.
- Prefer demonstrated clinical competency skills.
- Prefer demonstrated knowledge of pharmacology as it relates to health care practice and current prescription writing skills/DEA licensing.
- Prefer demonstrated skills in documentation in medical records to substantiate accurate billing.
- Prefer demonstrated effective written and verbal communication, strong analytical skills, leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Prefer effective interaction skills to ensure the successful care of patients in the clinical setting.
- Prefer knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations.
