Boone Memorial Health is seeking a detail-oriented and patient-focused Pre-Admission Testing Nurse (PAT RN) to join our perioperative services team. This specialized nursing role is responsible for comprehensive pre-operative assessment and preparation of patients scheduled for surgical, procedural, or invasive interventions.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring patient safety, optimizing surgical outcomes, and minimizing procedure delays or cancellations through proactive evaluation and coordination.
Position Summary
The Pre-Admission Testing Nurse conducts thorough pre-operative assessments, coordinates necessary testing, and provides education to patients and families. The PAT RN works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary teams to identify risks and ensure readiness for surgery. This role typically functions in a structured, daytime environment with a combination of office-based work and clinical assessments.
Key Responsibilities
Perform detailed pre-operative assessments including medical, surgical, family, and social histories; medication reconciliation; allergy review; and physical evaluations for patients across all age groups.
Interpret physician orders and review laboratory results, diagnostic tests, and EKGs to identify abnormalities or potential surgical risks. Communicate findings with surgeons or anesthesiology as needed.
Coordinate and facilitate required pre-operative diagnostic testing, including lab work, EKGs, imaging, and other screenings, ensuring timely documentation and completion.
Conduct patient interviews by phone or in person to gather health information, verify compliance with pre-operative instructions, and reinforce preparation guidelines.
Provide education to patients and families regarding surgical procedures, anesthesia, post-operative care, pain management, and recovery expectations.
Collaborate with surgical and anesthesia teams to review patient readiness and address clinical concerns that may impact safety or scheduling.
Ensure completion and verification of all admission documentation including consents, health questionnaires, advance directives, and regulatory forms.
Support efficient patient throughput by escalating urgent issues, coordinating testing timelines, and contributing to the prevention of surgical delays.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) and comply with HIPAA, CMS, and Joint Commission standards.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and uphold infection prevention and evidence-based care practices.
Required Qualifications
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia; compact licensure accepted where applicable.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with relevant experience may be considered.
Minimum of 1–3 years of clinical nursing experience; perioperative, surgical, critical care, emergency, or ambulatory care experience preferred.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required based on patient population.
Specialty certifications such as CPAN, CAPA, or CNOR are preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Primarily daytime schedule (Monday–Friday, approximately 8:00 AM–4:00 PM), with occasional flexibility for extended testing needs.
Combination of office-based work and clinical responsibilities.
Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
Exposure to infectious diseases, chemicals, and bodily fluids; adherence to PPE protocols required.
