Position Responsibilities
• Modifies the interview techniques to adequately assess the infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient by identifying the physical, psychosocial, and educational needs.
• Assesses potential for compromised skin integrity, nutritional deficiencies, functional deficiencies, pain management history, and changes in elimination patterns within the infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient(s) making environmental changes or referrals as necessary.
• Completes physical assessment including discharge planning and education within departmental guidelines/times frames. Assesses patient readiness to learn and provides ongoing patient education, documenting all interventions and outcomes using approved hospital forms. involves patient/family in developing plan of care and accomplishing outcome goals. consistently and actively participates with interdisciplinary team.
• Maintains a collaborative working relationship with surgical coordinators and scheduling.
• Identifies potential problems and addresses them prior to day of surgery.
• Obtains copy of consults ordered by surgeon prior to day of surgery for AM admit and outpatient surgeries.
• Initiates preparation of patient and family physically and emotionally for surgery.
• Initiates process of obtaining a copy of the patients current history and physical as per hospital policy prior to day of surgery for outpatient surgeries and AM admits.
• Administers medications per physicians orders with zero errors, respecting patient rights and performing assessment, reassessment, assessing effectiveness and documentation according to hospital policy.
• Obtains all test results as ordered per surgeon pre-operatively and follows-up with surgeon regarding abnormal values prior to day of surgery.
• Delegates responsibilities to appropriate staff based upon patient needs and staff competencies.
• Responds to Code Blue, in department, and initiates CPR. Demonstrates a calm, professional manner during a crisis or emergency situation at all times within the patient care environment.
• Provides all patient care respectfully demonstrating/reviewing patient rights utilizing the nursing process and documenting in the acceptable hospital charting format.
• Maintains patient care equipment, alerts chain of command about necessary repairs, "red tags" broken equipment, and initiates calls to engineering/biomedical engineering as needed
• Initiates admission data base and MAR for outpatient and AM admit surgeries.
• Verifies correct patient by using current photo identification
• Educates/reviews pre-operative instructions with patient/family prior to day of surgery for AM admit and outpatient surgeries.
• Initiates pre-operative medication instructions per surgeon/anesthesia orders.
• Initiates Perioperative and Perianesthesia patient/family education.
• Implements all new physician orders within two hours of initiation for routing and within 30 minutes or less for stats.
• Performs initial vital signs and admission history to include introduction to patient and family. Assessment of chief complaint. Notification of anesthesia team of patients arrival to pre-testing area.
• Obtains and documents a complete nursing admission assessment, including physiological and psychological factors to develop a plan of care for outpatient and AM admit surgeries.
• Performs and documents an accurate systems assessment.
• Assess availability of transportation home after an outpatient procedure. Educates patient/family regarding the need for transportation home with a responsible adult after an outpatient procedure.
• All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Current RN FL State license
• BLS and ACLS required
• 1+ year of experience required
