Job Description
Job Summary
Nurses care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled. The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating, evaluating, and delegating the delivery of skilled patient care. The RN collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. The RN, using specialized knowledge, can perform the activities of administration, supervision, delegation, and evaluation of nursing practice. The responsibility cannot be avoided by accepting the orders or direction of others. The RN has continuous contact with physicians, patients, patient families/significant others, community agencies, patient care staff, and management. The Pre-Op/PACU Registered Nurse (RN) provides care and support to patients before surgery and/or for those recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia.
Position Responsibilities
• Assess, instruct, and prepare patients prior to surgery
• Ensures that operative and informed consents are signed and correct
• Collection and accurate recording of vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for surgical procedure
• Demonstrates proficient IV placement skills
• Participates in the development of patient plan of care including patient problems, goals, evaluations, and interventions
• Recognizes and reports symptoms and significant changes in patient's condition to appropriate personnel
• Follows age specific standards in administering of medication
• Monitors patient's vital signs
• Assesses and responds appropriately to patient's post-operative condition
• Provides pre-operative and discharge education responding to patients developmental and emotional needs
• Includes patient's family/significant other in-patient care, as appropriate
• Performs intervention duties in cases of post-operative emergencies
• Records all are information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
• Adheres to safety standards and precautions as outlined by national, state, facility, and professional regulations
• Monitors patients' physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum
• Participates in orientation and education of students and all nursing staff on an ongoing basis
Other Responsibilities
• Completes required orientation as directed by facility
• Follows facility, OSHA, and ASPAN safety rules and procedures
• Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
• Upholds HIPPA regulations
• Utilizes correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or equipment in order to prevent injury to patient and personnel
• Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities
• Punctual and dependent for assigned and confirmed shifts
• Attends regular staff meetings and in-services
• All other duties assigned by the Director or Nursing

Position Requirements
• Graduate of accredited nursing program
• Current Arizona nursing license, in good standing with Board of Nursing
• Current Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Minimum of one (1) year previous Pre-Op/PACU experience required
• Previous ambulatory surgery experience is preferred
• Ability to interact comfortably with a high volume of patients, families, and staff in a stressful environment
• CPAN and/or CAPA certification preferred
• Possess aptitude for maintaining pace of abbreviated patient encounters, keep patient flow to a two hour or less stay in post-operative care
• Must be able to read, speak, and write English fluently
• Be able to provide proof of identity and the right to work in the United States

Working Conditions
Nurses spend a considerable amount of time walking, bending, stretching, and standing; they assist in patient transfers, so they must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury. Registered Nurses in the Pre Op and PACU may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and biological agents to include, but not limited to: body fluids and wastes such as urine, blood, sputum, etc.; they may be exposed to anesthetic gases, drugs, and radiation. The use of disinfecting and sterilizing agents may cause damage to skin and respiratory system.
Physical Demands
• Ability to lift twenty-five (25) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients, instruments, and equipment may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds

Auditory abilities required by this job include: ability to correctly distinguish various body sounds, i.e. respirations, heart sounds, bowel sounds and to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment which would indicate dangerous or improper operation.
