Job Description
The Preop/PACU Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for surgery patients following established standards and practices. This individual is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and efficient care in both pre- and post-operative environments.

Responsibilities:
• Perform pre- and post-op assessment for patients; start and maintain IVs; perform and assess temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration for assigned patients; and administer prescribed medications and delivery of care in accordance with nursing standards and under direction of physician and anesthesiologist.
• Carry out and monitor nursing process for assigned patients, which include assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating a plan of nursing care for the patient.
• Prepare and equipment and assist physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
• Prepare patients for surgical procedures.
• Dispense medications as ordered and observe, record, and report patient’s condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians, maintaining accurate and timely updates in the patient’s chart.
• Prepare pre-/post-op area for the next patient, maintaining a timely flow of patients.
• Communicate and educate patient and patient’s family on all pre-admission and post-op procedures and care instructions.
• Communicate with employees, Director of Surgery, and physicians in a timely manner and maintain effective public relations with physicians, patients, patient families, and employees.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in the nursing field by attending classes and seminars as well as reading professional publications on an ongoing basis.
• Places a high priority on and maintains strict confidentiality in all situations.
• Participates in professional development activities and maintains applicable professional affiliations and certifications as required.
• Attends and participates in required organizational meetings and committees as requested.
• Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Certification/License Requirements:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and must hold a current Registered Nurse license to practice in the State of Indiana. Minimum of two years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in OR or Critical Care environment required. Experience as a surgical, perioperative, or critical care nurse preferred. Must maintain BLS and ACLS certifications.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Working environment is in a surgical environment. Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, bodily fluids, and other conditions common to a surgical environment. Work requires standing and walking or other means of mobility for extended periods of time. Position requires full range of body motion including reaching, handling and lifting/assisting patients, handling of instruments and equipment, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing must be in normal range for telephone contacts and to interact directly with patients. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Regularly interacts with the staff, physicians, and the public.
