Registered Nurse

Duties
The Registered Nurse delivers direct patient care services in line with legal, ethical, and institutional standards.
• Provides general nursing care to inmates in the facility's hospital or clinic. Care might also be administered in specialized areas such as psychiatric, operating room, orthopedics, and geriatrics.
• Develops individualized nursing assessments for patients, covers the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.
• May identify and assess high-risk symptoms/behaviors in patients, such as suicidal tendencies, homicidal risk, or risk of verbal and/or physical abuse.
• Conducts nutritional screening as part of the assessment process and refers patients to a dietitian for further nutritional evaluation if needed.
• Monitors the patient's plan of care, making necessary evaluations and modifications.
• May assess and document discharge planning needs for patients, coordinating and delegating care based on these assessments.
All correctional institution employees, including this role, hold the responsibility of maintaining the facility's security. This responsibility is fundamental, preceding all other duties associated with this position and is undertaken regularly and consistently.
