Responsibilities
The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible and accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process. She/he implements the Nursing Service standards of care and practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served and the areas of clinical practice.
Utilizes the nursing process in the systematic assessment and formulation of individualized plans of care to meet patient’s needs.
Exhibits critical thinking in the assessment, planning, prioritization, delivery and evaluation of patient care.
Documents data collection and assessments> plans of care interventions and patient responses per policy.
Identifies individualized patient/significant other learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meet needs.
Demonstrates knowledge, respect, and sensitivity of patient's rights. Serves as a patient advocate. Assures confidentiality of patient information.
Collaborates with other health care disciplines to coordinate patient care activities and discharge plans.
Maintains effective communication with staff, physicians, patients, and families, also within the unit and with other departments.
Coordinates and directs patients care activities, delegates task appropriately and accepts the accountability of her/his professional role.
Participates in the development of standards and unit departmental performance improvement activity.
Provide safe and therapeutic environment for patients, which promote health.
Makes decisions within her I his scope of practice and consistent with hospital policy, procedures, and protocol.
Participates in the orientation of personnel to the unit.
Collaborates with the Nursing Leadership to identify staff learning needs and supports an atmosphere conducive to the development of all unit personnel.
Utilizes opportunities for clinical learning and participates in continuing education activities to meet established requirements and for own professional development.
Serves on hospital and departmental committee.
Inspect room to ensure room is ready for appropriate procedures.
Check patients’ chart prior to procedure to ensure proper consent, identification, and medical chart is present.
Mark corrects surgery site, if applicable
Available to anesthesia during intubation.
Ensure correct instruments or equipment are correctly selected for appropriate procedures.
Ensures proper patient positioning
Responsible for calling time out before procedure.
Records case record of procedure.
Anticipates the needs of surgeon, anesthesiologist, and scrub nurse/ scrub tech.
If breaks in sterile technique occur, report the contamination immediately and take measures to correct the situation.
Responsible for correct handling of specimen.
Performs scrub nurse duties as assigned.
Blood Glucose Monitoring (BGM):
Performs patient point-of-care BGM according to Nursing Service Policy and Procedure
Performs glucometer control tests according to manufacturer guidelines and Nursing Service Policy and Procedure
Interprets abnormal/critical value BGM results and performs appropriate interventions according to Nursing Service Policy and Procedure
Restraints:
Utilizes restraint alternatives
Applies/maintains/documents restraints and protective devices per policy
Adheres to Patient Fall Policy and Protocol as defined in Nursing Service Policy and Procedure.
Patient Identification:
Demonstrates use of two (2) identifiers prior to performing medication administration, procedures/treatments and collecting specimens.
Indicates appropriate patient identifiers used in outpatient and in-patient setting according to policy.
Pre-procedure care:
Verbalizes the nurse’s responsibility in the consent process.
Will cross train to work in Interventional Radiology as needed.
Position will work at both the Andrus and Dobbs Ferry Pavilions. Will cross train to ASU.
Qualifications
Currently licensed and registered to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York.
Preferred 1-2 years experience in O.R
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
ENDOSCOPY experience preferred. ACLS required
