General Summary of Position The Registered Nurse First Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the surgeon during various surgical procedures (excluding specific complex surgeries such as craniotomies and open heart surgeries). Working under the direct supervision of the surgeon, the RN First Assistant ensures patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes. Primary Duties and Responsibilities • Contributes to department goals and adheres to policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations. • Demonstrates integrity in technical and aseptic practice, effectively adapting to various situations while closely observing the operative field. • Reviews electronic medical records preoperatively and communicates critical information to the operating room team. • Assists the surgeon in safe patient positioning and draping, evaluates skin integrity post-operatively, and promptly reports any abnormalities. • Provides optimal exposure of anatomy during procedures by maintaining controlled retraction and managing instruments efficiently. • Executes hemostasis by placing/removing vessel clamps, using electrocautery, tying vessels, and applying ligatures as directed by the surgeon. • Closes layers of tissue effectively using various suturing techniques and ensures proper skin edge approximation. • Performs the duties of RN-OR as needed, assists in room turnover, handles specimens according to established procedures, and aids in patient transport. • Maintains requirements of the RN IV Clinical Ladder and performs other assigned duties. Minimal Qualifications Education • Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited institution. • Completion of an approved Surgical Assistant program. Experience • 1-2 years of operating room nursing experience. • Completion of clinical ladder requirements. • Must respond to the hospital within 30 minutes when on-call. Licenses and Certifications • State Licensure or Compact State Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Maryland. • Current certification from the attended Surgical Assistant Program (e.g., CNOR, SA-C, CSFA). • Certified Operating Room Nurse (CNOR) certification required. • CPR certification for healthcare providers from AHA or American Red Cross within 90 days. • ACLS certification required. • Additional certifications may vary by department. This position offers a competitive salary range of USD $49.33 - USD $94.71 per hour.
