Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Med-Surg Night Shift Location: Winnsboro Overview Registered Nurse (RN) Med-Surg Night Shift. Under direction and supervision of the charge nurse, director of nursing, and/or assistant director of nursing. Responsible for total patient care within the assigned nursing unit or floor; performs all professional patient care functions and carries out administrative responsibilities as delegated by the charge nurse, director of nursing, and/or assistant director of nursing. Maintain good working relationships. Complies with established policies and procedures. Cooperate with all departments to achieve goals. Keeps all information confidential. Maintains patient privacy. Knows repeated absenteeism is reason for dismissal. Gets annual physical done on anniversary date of hire. • Keeps up-to-date in field of nursing. Attends in-service (including fire and safety), monthly staff meetings, seminars when possible. CPR update. Current licensure. ACLS AND PALS preferred. • Participates in planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care and in management of unit. Meets with supervisor, director of nursing and/or assistant director of nursing to discuss unit problems, staffing, assignments, and improvement of patient care. • Acts as charge nurse when applicable. Under direction of house supervisor. Understands the principles of ward management and is able to assume responsibilities. Makes rounds, transcribes orders, reports unusual happenings and problems from other departments to the med/surg director or director of nursing (as applicable). • Makes assignments. Is fair. Makes assignments according to skill and qualifications of personnel. • Assesses each patient’s needs and plans their care. All patients must be assessed by an RN on admission with nursing history completed. Nursing care plan is started at this time. • Patient teaching. Instruct patients and family as appropriate with permission of physician using established guidelines. • Discharge planning. After assessment, the nurse will start discharge plans. Is knowledgeable about source of help. Notifies case management and/or social services for help if necessary. • Discharge patient instructions must be completed 100% of the time. • Administers medications and treatments as prescribed. Utilizes 5 Rs of safe medication administration. Records medication/treatments on chart using proper procedure. Writes legibly. Is familiar with actions of drugs administered. Counts and charts narcotics each shift 100% of the time. Reports errors promptly. Questions inconsistencies. Applies proper technique (aseptic, isolation, sterile). • Physician rounds. Physician should be accompanied by a nurse unless he/she requests otherwise. Assists with dressings and treatments. Ascertains physician’s expectations. Shares information. • Patient personal care.
