The Medical Surgical unit at Mercy South is a unit that manages acute medical surgical patients with a wide range of diagnoses and care needs.
Functionally, this unit houses and cares for patients who are preparing for or recovering from medical and surgical interventions.
This can include care of patients with illnesses such as pneumonia and sepsis; as well as pre and post op management of pain, wound care, and monitoring for any complications post procedure.
The Med-Surg unit also manages chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, and chronic kidney disease.
Service lines include oncology, nephrology, urology, gastroenterology, and many more.
Given the generalized nature of the Med-Surg unit and the amount of variation in patient conditions, the acuity of patients vary.
Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate’s, Diploma, or BSN).Licensure: Must hold a current RN license in the hiring state or compact licensure, and meet all state board of nursing requirements.Physical Requirements: Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 lbs regularly. Prolonged standing and walking during shifts. Must be able to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat.Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association, or completion within 30 days of hire. Additional certifications may be required based on unit, or obtained within department timeframe: ACLS, NRP, ENPC, TNCC, CPHON, OCN, PALS, PEARS, S.T.A.B.L.E., C-EFM, or other unit-specific certificationsPreferred Qualifications: Education, licensure, experience, and certifications may vary by unit and are preferred but not required.
