JOB SUMMARY:
The inpatient Certified Wound Ostomy Continency Consultant (CWOCN Consultant), Registered Nurse will provide clinical oversight and coordination for inpatient would care services. Consultation, educational support and staff development activities that provide the bedside nurse with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage wounds will be critical to the success of this position. In addition, the wound care nurse may provide consultative and educational services to patients and their family members to assist them in the management of their individual wound care needs. Ultimate responsibility and accountability for day to day patient care will continue to rest on the individual nurse responsible for the patient, unit based resource nurses and the Nurse Manager of each unit. The CWOCN Consultant will also serve as a resource to the hospital regarding National Patient Safety Goals related to pressure ulcers.
JOB DUTIES
• Provides wound care consultations and educational support to inpatients and their family regarding wound care management.
• Works collaboratively with physicians to evaluate and recommend treatment modalities related to wound care and facilitate consultations by physicians as necessary.
• Contributes to nursing orientation with a focus on skin assessment, documentation and prevention of pressure ulcers.
• Functions as a resource to staff for cost effective, appropriate utilization of wound care dressings, supplies, and pressure reduction specialty beds.
• Contributes to discharge planning meetings on units managing patients with wounds. Develops and provides staff training to develop wound care skills for the bedside nurses.
• Coordinates incidence and prevalence study and participate in risk management/performance improvement activities aimed at improving the incidence and severity of hospital acquired pressure ulcers.
• Participates with materials management in the review selection of all specialty supplies, dressing, and materials for wound care to facilitate cost effective utilization and compliance with vendor contracts.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES:
Education: Graduate of an accredited school for professional nursing with Bachelor degree in Nursing. Graduate of an accredited school of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing.
Licensure: Indiana Nursing License. Certification through the WOCNCB.
Experience: Minimum of two years current clinical acute care setting.
