Job Description Join UChicago Medicine, as a Special Procedures Nurse in the Pediatric Cancer Center at the Comer Children's Hospital. As a Special Procedures Nurse in the Pediatric Cancer Center and Special Procedures Area, and under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, you will provide complex, specialized, compassionate nursing care to children and adolescents receiving cancer treatment and infusion therapies in an outpatient clinic setting. This role requires strong clinical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a family-centered approach to care. The nurse collaborates closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary team members to ensure safe, effective, and supportive treatment delivery. Essential Job Functions: • Administer chemotherapy, immunology, blood products, biologics, and other infusion therapies in accordance with established protocols and safety standards. • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, symptom management and treatment tolerance. • Access, manage and maintain central venous catheters (i.e. PICC lines, ports, tunneled catheters). • Monitor patients for adverse reactions and respond promptly to infusion-related emergencies. • May require extensive familiarity with hematologic and oncologic diseases, chemotherapy drugs and treatment protocols. • Follows UCMC protocols. • Identifies issues, presents strategies and acts as a change agent to resolve unit and patient care issues. • Accepts responsibility for learning as part of the development of their own professional practice. • Permanent charge nurse functions and responsibilities. • Provides patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner; demonstrates knowledge of age-specific considerations in the provision of care. Involves a multidisciplinary team as needed to support patient and family psychological, social and spiritual needs. • Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed. • Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working condition; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person. Maintains a neat and clean work area with equipment. Maintains adequate inventory control of all necessary supplies. Emergency equipment maintained with adequate availability, good working order and restocks as needed with a fiscal awareness and accountability. • Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families, visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive and accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles and employs in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible. Required Qualifications: • Active Illinois Registered Nurse licensure • Bachelor of Science in Nursing • Current CPR through the American Heart Association • PALS, or able to obtain within 6 months of hire • Pediatric oncology experience preferred, or equivalent experience may be considered. • APHON, or able to obtain within 6 months of hire Position Details: • Job Type/FTE: Full-Time (.90 FTE) • Shift: Days, Monday-Friday, varied (7A-7P) • Work Location: Onsite • Unit/Department: Pediatric Cancer Center • CBA Code: Non-Union Why Join Us We’ve been at the forefront of medicine since 1899. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position. The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
