The donor center is open Tuesday-Saturday. Schedule is a mix of 8-, 10-, and 12-hour shifts. Every other Saturday required. Shifts include the donor room and the mobile bus throughout the state of MA. A resume is required to be considered for the position. Job SummaryStaff Nurse / 24 Hour Days / Kraft Family Blood Donor Center BWH The Kraft Family Blood Donor Center registered nurse is expected to ensure donor and patient health and safety before, during and after donor room procedures. Competency with apheresis and therapeutic procedures and associated equipment and in monitoring collections to achieve blood components of the highest quality. Practice must follow departmental Standard Operating Procedures and the Nursing Departments Clinical Practice Manual. Must have a working knowledge of AABB, FDA, FACT and other regulatory agency guidelines. Responsibilities: - Following the donor selection criteria of the departmental Standard Operating Procedures, interviews donors to determine eligibility, conducts the medical history and physical examination. - Provides the donor with opportunity to ask questions and provides explanation to assure donor understanding. - Follows established criteria for the temporary/permanent deferral of donors to prevent inadvertent collection from a donor who is ineligible. - Refers problems or questions of donor suitability to Medical Director or designee. - Obtains and/or documents Informed Consent of a blood or platelet donor prior to collection; explains elements of donation procedure including information on risks of procedure and tests performed. - Follows infection control standards in preparation of the phlebotomy site. - Maintains continuity of donor identification by carefully labeling of all collection bags and pilot tubes and assuring volume collected is appropriate. - Observes donors/patients for adverse reaction to phlebotomy or procedures, and takes appropriate action as required. - Performs the following procedures according to departmental standard operating procedures and clinical practice standards, such as collection of whole blood, platelet pheresis, and lab draws. - Demonstrates knowledge of the operation and maintenance standards for pheresis equipment and other equipment used in the department. - Uses the donor software system & epic/Beaker for documentation of donor visits. Qualifications To qualify you must have:Experience2+ Years of charge RN experience, must be recent within the last 6 months (Required).3-5 Years of nursing experience (Required).2-5 years of IV insertion experience, must be recent within the last 6 months (Required).Blood donor, oncology, apheresis, critical care, or emergency room experience (Highly Preferred).EducationBachelor's Degree Nursing (Required).Experience can be accepted in lieu of a degree.Licenses and CredentialsMassachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license is required Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThe RN must show evidence of the basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of patients.Must demonstrate observational skills and the ability to set priorities.Must be able to function under stress with good interpersonal and communication skills.Must demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a procedural area.Must demonstrate effective skills in applying hospital standards in area of service, teamwork, communication, respect for others, and time/priority management.
