An exciting opportunity awaits experienced registered nurses with a passion for cardiac and critical care nursing in a newly opening Progressive Care Unit (PCU) that will transition to a full Intensive Care Unit (ICU) by the end of the year. This contract position is based in Winston-Salem, NC, at a highly regarded academic medical center with Level 1 Trauma designation and comprehensive specialty services. Nurses engaged in this role will provide care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions including post-cardiac surgeries, heart transplants, and advanced cardiac support devices. Key Responsibilities: • Provide specialized nursing care to patients with cardiac and vascular diagnoses such as CHF, STEMI/NSTEMI, post-CABG, and mechanical support devices including Impella and LVAD. • Manage advanced critical care procedures including wound care, defibrillation, cardioversions, EKG interpretation, chest tubes, tracheostomies, arterial lines, and administration of multiple IV drips. • Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team including intensivists, hospitalists, respiratory therapists, and specialized nursing staff. • Prepare for and adapt to the transition from PCU to ICU environment, including care for vented and post-open heart surgery patients. • Maintain vigilant patient monitoring and respond to emergent clinical situations in a fast-paced setting. Qualifications and Desired Experience: • Minimum of 2 years ICU or PCU experience required; CVICU experience highly preferred. • Certification in BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS). • Familiarity with cardiac devices, Swan-Ganz catheters, Impella pumps, and complex hemodynamic monitoring. • Competency in wound care and post-surgical management. • Experience with LVAD and cardiac transplant patients is highly desirable; training available for candidates with strong ICU background. • Willingness to float to other units as needed within the scope of practice.
