Stepdown Unit Nurse (RN) in Saint Louis, MO in St. Louis, MO

Provide specialized nursing care in a cardiac stepdown unit, delivering expert patient assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation within an acute-care setting. This contract position offers seasoned Registered Nurses the opportunity to work nights in a 32-bed inpatient unit focusing on post-operative cardiac patients, including those recovering from CABG, valve surgeries, thoracotomies, and respiratory failure. Responsibilities include: • Utilizing the nursing process to manage complex cardiac patients requiring chest tubes, temporary pacemakers, and BiPAP support • Coordinating care with multidisciplinary teams and ancillary departments to optimize patient outcomes • Maintaining patient confidentiality and upholding professional, ethical standards in line with state nurse practice acts and clinical policies • Adapting to unit-specific physical demands such as patient transfers and mobility assistance • Adhering to facility dress codes and infection control standards Qualifications/Desired Experience: • Current RN license eligible or licensed in Missouri • Minimum of 1 year experience in cardiac stepdown or similar critical care unit • BLS and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association required; NIHSS preferred • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EPIC) and high-acuity monitoring • Ability to float to similar or lower acuity units as needed Schedule & Assignment Details: • Night shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, 36 or 48 hours weekly (specify preference upon application) • Weekend rotation every other weekend required • 26-week contract with potential for extension • Orientation during day shift required before night shift start Benefits of this position include the chance to develop specialized cardiac care skills in a supportive environment equipped with advanced technology.
