Then the 2026 Summer Nurse Extern Program is for you! About The Program • One 10-week program from May 11, 2026 through July 18, 2026 • 32 hours per week, in a combination of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts based on RN preceptor's schedule • Day Shift, Night Shift and Rotating Shift options are available • Paid clinical experience (320 total program hours) • In-person clinical orientation the first week of the program, mentoring from nurses, leaders, and networking • Variety of clinical areas based on availability • Work 1:1 with an RN preceptor in assigned clinical area • Opportunities for continued employment if program expectations are met Positions Available At Four Henry Ford Southeast Michigan Hospitals • Henry Ford St John Hospital, Detroit • Henry Ford Warren Hospital, Warren • Henry Ford Providence Southfield Hospital, Southfield • Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital, Novi General Summary • Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient using the nursing process. • Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. • Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. • Recognizes and participates in own continuing education. Education/Experience Required • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent OR currently enrolled in the Henry Ford Health Early College Program and meets the completion of two clinical rotations as required at an accredited school of nursing. • Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. • The completion of two clinical rotations, one of which must be Med/Surg (in an acute care setting). • To remain in the extern role, you MUST: • Actively be enrolled in a nursing program. • Successfully complete each course. • Provide transcripts to Nurse Manager after each semester/term. • Provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager. • If at any point the extern does not meet their academic institution's standard for continued enrollment in the school of nursing classes, their employment as an extern will be rescinded. • Position is time limited. • a. ADN: Maximum 12 months for ADN. • b. BSN: Maximum 24 months for BSN (adjust for Part Time BSN programs). • May complete during orientation. • Successful completion of 180-day introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit. Certifications/Licensures Required • Current Health Care Provider Certification Required.
