POSITION SUMMARY:
Supervises and performs therapeutic apheresis and blood collection procedures for volunteer donors and patients within scope of licensure and training. Schedules therapeutic procedures upon receipt of physician's orders. Performs apheresis component collections as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages care for patients undergoing clinical apheresis procedures and donor apheresis collections
Acts as a clinical consult to the ordering physician in the treatment planning process; coordinates and verifies physician orders to perform therapeutic apheresis procedures
Consults with Medical Director as necessary for clairification of orders, transfusion reactions and/or emergency situations
Ensures appropriate scheduling and staffing for therapeutic procedures
Assesses patient status to determine suitability for therapeutic procedures
Performs venipunctures and access central venous catheters
Supervises the apheresis technician assisting in the procedures
Monitors the patient status and instrument functions during the procedure and responds appropriately
Provides post-procedure care; follows up on adverse reactions and donor injuries
Maintains and reviews all required patient charts, to include preparing paperwork and supplies for therapeutic apheresis procedures, documenting the procedure and sending records to Medical Director as indicated by SOPs
Maintain instruments and equipment used in apheresis including maintenance, calibration verification, quality control and troubleshooting
Manages personnel activities which includes interviewing, hiring, coaching, counseling, and disciplinary action
Monitors and assesses employee performance related to established KPIs and competencies, addressing performance gaps and issuing corrective action where needed; mentors and champions the professional development of team members
Provides training for nurses and apheresis technicians who perform or assist with therapeutic procedures
Attends meetings and seminars as necessary to maintain proficiency and knowledge of developments in Apheresis field
Follows all policies and procedures issued by the Blood Center, regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, OSHA, AABB) and complies with good manufacturing practices (cGMP) and good tissue practices (cGTP)
May drive a Company vehicle as necessary to administer therapeutic apheresis procedures offsite.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Louisiana required
Bachelor’s degree in nursing, plus at least five (5) years of related nursing experience, including IV, venipuncture and Central Venous Catheter experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience suifficent to perform the job duties
Must be familiar with or demonstrate ability to learn all FDA regulations governing blood banking, AABB standards, OSHA regulations, and Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)
Must demonstrate a positive approach toward donors, technicians and other staff members, acting in a highly professional manner at all times.
Must be self-motivated, dependable, punctual, and have demonstrated effective organizational and communication skills.
Must be able to maintain confidentiality of donor information at all times.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS / ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally performed in the donation center.
Must be able to lift apheresis equipment and supplies up to 35 lbs., unassisted.
Must be able to perform duties requiring standing or bending for long periods of time without relief.
Must be able to work irregular hours, in excess of 8 hours per day, and week-ends, including rotating week-end call with other staff members.
Must be able to work with needles, scissors, blood bags, human blood and collection equipment and deal with stressful situations.
Work involves potential exposure to infectious diseases from blood and blood products.
May require operation of a Company vehicle for offsite procedures or meetings; must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by our commercial auto insurance carrier.
