Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Registered Nurse Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: One year of professional nursing experience preferred License: Current licensure in the state of employment required Certifications: Valid driver's license required Must-Have: Graduate from an accredited college, university or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing required Description: The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers. The RN will dispense and administer medications. Assistance will be provided to the Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients. Nursing and supervisory techniques will be applied in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. All technical and clinical procedures will be performed within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills will be applied in the treatment of inmates/residents. The RN will attend sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents. The RN will prepare a list of inmates/residents to be examined. Examining rooms and equipment will be prepared as necessary. Pill call will be operated, medications dispensed, and documentation completed in accordance with policies and procedures. The RN will contact Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, as well as for emergencies. New inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries will be examined and assessed. Referrals to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facilities will be made as required. Emergency procedures will be performed as needed, and Licensed Independent Providers will be notified for treatment orders. The RN will assist in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel. Guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff will be provided. The RN will maintain a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies. Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures will be used in decision-making. Sound independent judgment will be used in meeting responsibilities and performing duties. Regular evaluations of the provision of medical services will be conducted to prevent inappropriate use and duplication. Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records will be maintained. Assistance will be provided to the Health Service Administrator in reviewing medical files. All potential catastrophic illnesses will be closely monitored. Pharmacy use will be audited for adherence to formulary as required. Compliance with applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is required. Inmate/resident behavior will be observed and recorded. The medical unit will be inspected for items that could be used as contraband. Health counseling and health education will be provided on an individual or group basis as needed. The Health Service Administrator will be assisted in preparing and maintaining a variety of reports and logs. Medical and technical procedures will be read, analyzed, comprehended, and interpreted. Responses to lawsuits will be reviewed and processed as necessary. Accreditation of the medical program by relevant authorities will be facilitated where applicable. Safety and accident reports will be prepared and disseminated as required. Appropriate action will be taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
