Unit Overview – Medical Surgical / Telemetry (Some Progressive Care)
UVMHN Porter’s Med Surg/Tele Unit cares for a broad adult population including medical, telemetry, orthopedics, urology, ENT, GYN, general surgery, and select progressive-care–level patients. The unit is known for strong teamwork, 24/7 hospitalist support, and a culture that values professional growth.
The team functions as the Code 99, Rapid Response, Fall, and IV team for the hospital. While PCU-level patients may board briefly, any patient requiring a higher level of care is transferred to an ICU/ED within the UVM network.
Shift & Scheduling
• 12-hour shifts: 0645–1915 or 1845–0715
• Weekend/Holiday: As needed to staff the unit
• Floating: Voluntary only; within scope
• Charge: Not required
Experience Requirements
• Minimum Overall RN Experience: 2 years
• Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years Med Surg/Telemetry
• Travel Experience: Not required
• Certifications:
• Required: BLS
• Preferred: ACLS
Nurse–Patient Ratios
• Based on acuity; typically 1:4–5
Ancillary Support
• CNA/LNA/PCT: Yes — generally 2–3 per shift
• Unit Secretary: Variable day-to-day
• Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
